Through the eyes of a sixth grader
By Tatyanna D., Angelica G., Ilsia H.
They say that first impressions always matter and to an ex-fifth grader ready for a change, coming to middle school has made a huge difference from elementary school. At first there is something called Orientation which helps to take away the nervousness that sixth graders and their parents seem to have about coming to middle school. Orientation was very helpful since there, we were introduced to our school principal Dr. John L. White, our counselors and many of our new teachers. We received our new class schedule and a locker combination. For some of those students who never had to open a locker before, learning how to open it the right way was like learning to disassemble a ticking time bomb while being under the pressure of the tardy bell ringing.
It's been an exciting time with all the new changes like having different class periods, including a P.E. class. Another difference is having up to three teachers when before we only had one plus an assistant at the most.
Lunch time is full of free sitting in the cafeteria with the possibility of eating pizza every day if you really wanted to, which is not that healthy but it is really cool if you think about it. The cafeteria people are always working hard at making a better meal, let's think about it a little and imagine the responsibility it must be to feed a big school like Mulholland. This takes us to another matter, the school cafeteria must be really good here because every one seems to be so eager to get to the food that they push and shove you out of the way. Let's give it up for the hard working people at the school cafeteria, who do not always get the recognition they deserve. So the next time you stop by the cafeteria, remember to thank the cafeteria staff.
Wearing a uniform to school has been another big change, before you could wear the clothes you usually wear for every day use, but now you have to wear a uniform, which is not all that bad since sometimes we get free dress days, on these day we get to wear our regular clothes. We just had a free dress day and all the students were so excited about it, everyone was asking each other what they were going to wear on free dress day. They wanted to know wether they were going to wear Jeans and a casual shirt or just the regular uniform. Most of the school wore Jeans and a casual shirt but some opted to wear their uniform too.
There are also several after school programs you can sign up for like After School All Stars, some of their staff is made up of High school students from Birmingham, which is the high school behind our school just in case you haven't noticed yet. They have fun classes at the after school program which include Dancing and theater among other things, there is so much fun stuff you can do that we cannot name it all in one article.
In conclusion being in the sixth has not been dull at all, we have a little more freedom than what we had in the fifth grade and more responsibilities. We are also learning more complicated subjects like Algebra equations and literature. We are looking forward to keep moving on.
